Almost Done (But My Place Was on Fire)

…or would “done for” have been a better way to describe the last few days.

Last year, I was downed by a series of flu like symptoms during my taper period and it cast doubts on my ability to finish, or even run, the Milo Marathon. This year I was feeling good coming into the last 2 weeks with my knee concerns fading into the background when….my place nearly gets burned down! A fire struck the 24th floor of the apartment building I live in and while I was in the office and my family was able to evacuate the premises before they were in any danger, I worried for all my things left behind specially my race bib and running shoes. At almost midnight, when the fire was finally put out, we were allowed to go up to our units to get some things and lock up. However, the elevator was out and I needed to climb 12 flights of flooded stairs to get to my floor. On the way down, I was carrying enough bags for a 1 month stay in Europe. Talk about tapering!

While packing some clothes into our bag, my wife gives me a strange look. “Tatakbo ka pa?” She saw my Nimbus 10, together with my running shirt and shorts. Since I did not know how long we would be out of the house I brought along 1 set of running gear. I planned to wash it after my runs so that I could use it again the next day.

The next day we needed some more things from the house and I had to do my new stair workout all over again, but by last night the service elevator was finally working and we decided to go home. Because there is only one elevator functioning, it takes a while for it to get to my floor when I am going up or down. In which case I don’t hesitate to take the stairs anymore (at least when I’m going down).

  1. Maybe even an armageddon can’t pull you back now. Good to know you’re back home, rest and forget europe. I’ll see you at the starting line.

There’s no place like home and no race like a marathon! See you at the starting line!

  2. Jay!!! Glad to hear you’re safe and sound. Even better to know that your nimbus and race bib weren’t lost in the fire :) Nothing will get in between you and your marathon! Good luck on sunday :)

Thanks Jaymie! It’s very easy to be consumed by thoughts of the race this week but that night I was really more concerned for my family and the other residents of the building. It was an exhausting day and the thought of losing my bib and my shoes simply made me laugh!

  3. Thank God your family’s safe (and your stuff too). I was so worried when I heard from Vima’s hubby that Parc Royale was on fire because I knew you lived there. Haha turns out mas kabado pa ako sayo when I called. Where are you staying now? Ingat and see you Sunday..

Haay nako Margs alam mo naman ang mga Pinoy. It was like a party at the lobby with people laughing and chatting away while waiting for the firemen to finish the job. Stayed at my mom’s but back home now. Thanks for the concern and good luck on Sunday!

  4. Whew, that was a close call. Glad to know things are normalizing a bit for you. All the best on your Milo marathon :-)

Thanks Rico! Congratulations for whipping up another amazing supporting crew for Sunday’s races. If this country were made up of more generous people like yourselves then we would be so much better off.

  5. jay, if i’ve known you are staying in that place, i could have brought the whole team to help you. i was within that area at that time when the fire trucks were converging to your place. i am glad your family and property are safe. we hope to see you this sunday morning.

  9. I think all of this augurs well for an awesome Milo Marathon. I know you will succeed Jay, I just know it. BTW, “Tatakbo ka pa”….priceless hirit from the wifey….I also get that a lot from the misis :)

Thanks Levy. Buti na lang understanding misis ko. Ha ha ha!

  10. wala bang puwedeng ibang tanungin sa atin pag hawak natin ang running gears kahit may sunog, bagyo o lindol?

  15. Greetings Prometheus!

May you and your family never face this kind of ordeal again.

WE will see you at the race this Sunday.

    Run Strong and Prosper!

Could I have called on your flying saucer to save me if I was trapped in the building? I hope so! Please send your leader my thanks and see you on Sunday!

  16. Hi Jay. Good to hear that you and your family are safe. Take care my friend and good luck on Sunday!

Thanks Wayne! If it weren’t for all your advice last year I would not be here today.

  17. Hi Jay. My office building is just across your place and we could see all that black smoke coming out of the building. Good to hear you and your family are ok, and that the fire didn’t dampen your spirit!

    Thanks Janine!

  18. Hi Jay, oh wow what an ordeal. Thank God you and your family came out of it unscathed. As a victim of a fire myself (condo unit nearly burned down and landed me three weeks in the hospital for several grafts) I can only shudder and empathize at how stressful this could have been. Fires are so volatile, it could have gone either way for you. Take the day to relax and clear your head, and should you decide to run tomorrow, surely my prayers would be with you. Take it easy man.

  19. reason why we missed you at Megamall last Tuesday. We were relieved when Marga updated us of what happened. Buti na lang you and your family is safe. See you Jay, go for it tom! :)

  20. Hey Jay, congrats! Friends told me of your very good finish. Galing, you did reach your goal time. :-) Everything needs hard work and that’s the secret to real success.
